After the success of their debut self-titled album, Saint Jude took some time out to refine their sound. Whereas the debut was written and produced before the then newly-minted quintet had played a single show, Saint Jude II avows the characters of the players to better articulate the songs’ structure and tone, crafting a far livelier, richer sound.

Captured over a long weekend in the stately Victorian country manor, Stokes Roft towards the tail of Summer, Saint Jude II meters out slow-burning country-soul; underpinned by the swirling guitar and organ combination and tapered five-piece gospel harmonies that have become synonymous with Saint Jude’s live show.

Shamelessly wearing a rhythm and soul tapestry of influences on their sleeves, Saint Jude again draw heavily from the Muscle Shoals and Shangri-La eras of rhythm-drenched country-soul and Americana.

Note that this is no heritage record though. Rather, the instruments and consider- ately resonant voice of frontman (and producer) Brooke Penrose bridge the gap between the influencers’ ideological intent and modern arrangements, to craft a sound befitting its time and place.

Crisp and exuberant, Saint Jude II displays equal certainty across both heartrending blue-eyed Southern soul numbers, such as singles ‘Laurelie’ and ‘Only You I Need’, and upbeat countrified-pop ‘Afraid to Change’ and Kinks cover ‘This Time Tomorrow’.
